About Us
Electric City, Inc. was founded in January 2015 to address the severe electrical fire risks that disabled Veterans, senior citizens, the economically challenged, and disabled homeowners of Michigan face. Working at the intersection of human needs, community partnerships and innovation, Electric City pioneered a unique approach to ensuring the electrical safety of those who need it most. Rather than our clients living in fear of electrical fires and not knowing where to turn, our program will reach out to them if their circumstances meet our program requirements.
Did you know...
There were over 3,000 homes in Michigan that had a fire of ELECTRICAL ORIGIN ALONE between 2010-2015, and property damages costing over $58 million...
Faulty wiring
from the electrical distribution including service entrance cable, meter can, and panel board to electrical outlets account for almost half of these fires, and electrical fire losses and fire death are significantly higher than in non-electrical fires.
Aging infrastructure
is a major safety concern and electrical fire risk. Many homes in Michigan were built between 1950-59, but many homes were built at the turn of the century and most have not had any electrical updates. These homes still contain knob and tube wiring, which has been phased out due to electrical fire hazards.
1.3 million
disabled Veterans and adults in Michigan ages 18-64, and just over 200,000 families with incomes less than $24, 000 per year. These men and women may be unaware that they are in danger of an electrical fire, do not know who to reach out to for electrical upgrades, and/or do not have the funds to make the appropriate upgrades. They need resources to make the electrical renovations so they are safe in their homes.
Electrical Fires
are almost twice as likely to spread than from other sources of residential fires. In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be engulfed in flames. Most deadly fires occur in the home when families are asleep.
Current Projects
We are currently conducting a small-scale, short-term pilot program to help our organization confirm how our larger-scale project will work in practice.
